Trigger Warning: Police brutality and anti-Black violence

On May 25th, George Floyd, a 46 year-old African-American man, was unjustifiably murdered by four Minnesota Police Department officers despite his repeated cries of “I can’t breathe.” For over 8 minutes, Derek Chauvin, a White police officer, kept his knee to Floyd’s neck - even after Floyd had become unresponsive. This incident highlighted a long history of police brutality against minorities, especially African Americans, in the US and has ignited numerous demonstrations and protests in cities across the United States, from Dallas to Seattle.

Texas ABSA stands in solidarity with George Floyd and those affected by past acts of police brutality and racial discrimination. Such egregious violence has no place in our society and must not be ignored or tolerated any longer. Inspired by @Texas HBSA and numerous other student organizations on campus, we are asking our members, alumni, and everyone who comes across this message to take a stand and support us in making a difference.

Texas ABSA is matching up to $500 of donations we receive for @Communities United Against Police Brutality (CUAPB) , a Minneapolis-based volunteer organization working proactively to combat police brutality through education, research, political and legislative actions, and support for victims and families. To donate, please Venmo @TexasABSA with the message “CUAPB” by June 10th. No matter big or small, contribution of any amount is a powerful response that things need to change.

This incident reminded us that there is still much progress to be made, and we need to do our part in making it happen. As Asian Americans, we must recognize our privilege as a non-Black POC and realize that one of the most important steps we can take is to educate ourselves on these issues and rectify the misconceptions we had grown to accept. We encourage each of you to do the same, regardless of your background or beliefs, and work to better the world we live in.

We have attached a document with resources, including news articles, podcasts, movies, and TV shows, that are used to educate people on racism. The fight against racism, discrimination, and police brutality doesn’t stop here, but continues in every aspects of our lives. However, it is a battle we must never give up on.
