The Asian Business Students Association Consulting Team is a leading student-run consulting organization on campus. Our aim is to aid local Austin businesses in tackling their hardest problems. To date, we have served fourteen companies, ranging across ten different industries, and encompassing issues that range from bolstering tourism in a rural Chinese village to advising leading global companies in multimillion dollar ventures.
Current Consulting Team Projects
Watson is a question answering computing system built by IBM to apply advanced natural language processing, information retrieval, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, and machine learning technologies to the field of open domain question answer. Watson provides high value-add capabilities such as accelerating and improving decision making, reducing operational costs, and optimizing outcomes.
RetailMeNot is the world’s largest digital coupon aggregator. The company’s website features hundreds of thousands of valid digital coupons from retailers around the globe. In 2012, the company’s portfolio of websites featured almost half a billion visits and facilitated an estimated $2.4 billion in sales. The company also has an incredible mobile presence, with one fifth of its total web traffic being directed through mobile devices. For our project, we provided value-add services such as market validation, commercialization strategy, and mock-up creation. Our team ultimately provided valuable support in RetailMeNot’s strategy decision-making process.
Raven + Lily
Raven + Lily currently helps employ marginalized women in Ethiopia, India, Cambodia and the United States at fair trade wages to give them access to a safe job, sustainable income, healthcare, education, and a real chance to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families.” – Raven + Lily website. Our project’s focus was to create a balanced budget for the company. Our team performed a holistic review of both the company’s operations and the jewelry industry, finding specific areas in which the company can cut costs and boost its bottom line.
N Housing, LLC
N Housing provides fully furnished apartment homes to traveling and transferring business professionals requiring temporary housing in Austin for 30 days or more. Apartments include furniture, housewares, appliances, a fully functional kitchen and electronics. A preferred alternative to a hotel room stay, corporate housing offers guests the space, comfort and privacy of residential living. N Housing is taking a tech savvy approach to corporate housing by creating a website that is user friendly that is a portal of resources for its clients. Our goal is to use technology to solve problems and making corporate housing booking as easy as a hotel.
Smooth-Stone brings ultra-low power mobile phone technology to the datacenter. Smooth-Stone products and technologies enable datacenter managers to increase the density of their compute resources while significantly reducing energy consumption. Smooth-Stone has brought together leading engineers with experience in mainframes, server CPUs, network processors, telecom infrastructure, blade server platforms, and high performance cellular application processors and cell phone system-on-chips. Smooth-Stone technology combined with the industry-standard ARM architecture and tools enable truly green datacenters.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a nationally renowned charity organization which grants wishes to children suffering from terminal illnesses. Working closely with Tammy Shakelee, President and CEO of the Central and South Texas Chapter, we assisted in their $80,000 decision to purchase a top-of-the line database system.
We researched various aspects of the database package by gathering opinions from industry experts, interviewing organizations who were already using that database, and researching online. In the end, our deliverables included a report of user opinions, suggested key points for consideration, and a possible alternate database.
The YWCA is a worldwide organization dedicated to empowering women and eliminating racism. The Greater Austin chapter specifically serves its community by providing counseling services to low-income families and hosting racial justice seminars for practicing clinicians. Working closely with Diana Gorham, Executive Director of the Greater Austin Chapter, we targeted opportunities to restructure their marketing plan.
Through extensive face-time with the client and detailed analysis of the key players affecting their organization, we provided recommendations to make their existing marketing more efficient and effective. We also identified two additional segments which, if targeted, may become valuable sources of funding and publicity for this organization.
The Pick-A-Prof is an Austin-based Internet company that provides professor review and grading history services for college students. Working closely with Chris Chilek, CEO and founder of Pick-A-Prof, we assisted in developing and implementing their new marketing project, Advanced Student Marketing.
By categorizing different interest groups catered to the university, we researched niche local websites that college students frequently visit . Based on our research, we contacted them by two different approaches to find out optimal methods. Finally, we suggested how to implement our findings to other colleges nationwide.
